The Trailhead emerges from restored elevations to form walking and biking paths. Sweeping the full length of the park, the serpentine Rail Ribbon facilitates interactivity and creates continuous illumination.
Moving east, The Ridge provides a glimpse of the park’s trees and native plants, sowed to reinforce manageable natural habitats. Newly-constructed bridges honor the area’s marine and railway culture, while providing safe crossings and fresh views.
Across the next bridge, the Transfer Yard arrays shipping containers to host local pop-up retail. Fencing enhances privacy through imaginative clip-dot art, designed by guest artists and the community.
Snaking through the landscape, dual switchbacks provide accessible and immersive routes to the Sledding Hill and Community Garden, allowing for recreation and cultivation.
Managed meadow surrounds a magnificent elm. An elevated bridge diverges to form Swinghenge, a circular gathering of swings for all.
As the Rail Ribbon curves through Nature Reserve West with minimal environmental disruption, a Ghost Train Sculpture projects the area’s railway legacy.
Poised atop Nature Reserve East, the Steward Station rises. Recruited from nearby neighborhoods, Del Stewards provide a human touch, cleaning, planting, and fostering a sense of pride.
Following the familiar sound of clunking wheels, visitors reach the Old Double Bridge. New glass bump-outs enhance the vibrational power of trains passing below.
At the Terminus, the historic piers support a new wooden walkway that extends over the river. As it reaches its finale, the rhythm of the Rail Ribbon crescendos into a spiraling Photon.
The Del blends iconic features with practical solutions based on current topography and historic context. Its entry points and amenities are sited to work with and enhance current local resources and culture. Accessibility and connectivity merge with artistic flair and environmental elegance in a way that is uniquely Buffalonian… no illusions, just a park for real solace, connection, and enjoyment.
